New Track: Faking it

Faking It is about the endless self promotion imposed on artists and the pressure to ‘appear’ successful. Over the years I found I was spending 80% of my time focusing on self promotion and only 20% making and playing music. As an artist, you might get a win, a grant, a festival booking, an interview, however, in these all make little difference to the central goal of building an audience for your art.

The quest for success and income is a distraction from why we make art in the first place. It’s for the joy of self expression, of learning and developing our skills and of sharing our creation and ideas with others.

Getting your art to reach new people has become harder and harder, even before AI music streaming services and social media platforms were rigged to benefit those with the support of major labels and millions in funds to pay for large boosts. The days of being ‘discovered’ or even naturally going ‘viral’ are long gone.

So how do we build a bridge between art and audience? I’m not sure. Artists in the end always find a way. But however we do it, it will need to be very different.

This song is on all music streaming platforms and bandcamp.
